Surface coating is the application of a thin, colored or optical film onto a gemstone’s exterior. These coatings are usually:
– Metal oxide films (like titanium or bismuth compounds)
– Colored lacquers or polymers

Unlike treatments like heat or diffusion, coatings do not penetrate the gem. They change only the outer appearance — making this enhancement more cosmetic than transformative.

Common Gems Treated with Coatings

– Quartz – Coated for bright, fantasy colors (blue, pink, green)

The Surface Coating Process – Step by Step
