Geuda

Geuda is a type of sapphire that is considered a semi-precious gemstone in its natural state, primarily found in Sri Lanka. Unlike traditional sapphires that have vivid colors, geuda sapphires are typically milky or cloudy and have a whitish or grayish appearance. This haziness is due to the presence of tiny rutile inclusions within the stone, which scatter light and reduce transparency. While not valuable in its raw form, geuda has the potential to be transformed into valuable gems through heat treatment.

Key characteristics of geuda sapphires include:

Color and Appearance – In its untreated state, geuda typically lacks the deep, saturated colors seen in high-quality sapphires. It can appear white, gray, or pale in color with a milky, hazy look. However, after heat treatment, geuda sapphires can develop vibrant blue, yellow, or pink hues, similar to those of high-quality sapphires.

Clarity – Geuda stones are often opaque or semi-opaque due to internal inclusions. Heat treatment can significantly improve their clarity by dissolving some inclusions and enhancing the stone’s transparency and brilliance.

Heat Treatment – The most important aspect of geuda is its ability to be heat-treated. When heated at high temperatures in controlled conditions, geuda can turn into highly desirable, transparent, and vividly colored sapphires. This transformation process makes geuda highly valuable for gem dealers and jewelers, as it allows for the creation of affordable, yet high-quality, sapphires.

Hardness – Like other corundum gems, geuda has a Mohs hardness of 9, making it durable and ideal for use in jewelry once treated.

Origin – Geuda is mainly found in the gem-rich regions of Sri Lanka, particularly in areas like Ratnapura, known as the “City of Gems.” Sri Lanka is famous for producing the finest sapphires, and geuda forms a significant portion of the country’s sapphire production.
